Louder than War have a listen to Kite Base’ latest single.
Kite Base are a two-piece band consisting of bass guitarists Ayse Hassan (Savages) and Kendra Frost. ‘Soothe’ is the latest single and together with its b-side ‘Dadum’ is available via Flashback Records on limited 7” vinyl.
This two piece have certainly been making some waves with ‘Soothe’ having recently received plays on 6 Music from both Marc Riley and Radcliffe & Maconie. About to embark on their own live dates, Kite Base are readied and equipped with some great tunes.
Straight away what hits you about this duo is both the vocal and instrumental breadth of experience and technical nous that immediately catapults this band into a different sphere from usual bands. The bass has a great throbbing feel that is beautifully augmented by the insistent drum beat and nice discordant electronic and guitar in the background.
The vocals start to engulf the music in a really nice way. They remind me of Siouxsie Sioux and the obvious Florence Welch. But, there is an edge to the vocals that lifts the tune to more than pop. The bass takes over and you are left in a beautifully sung post punk atmosphere that has got you dancing, yet thinking at the same time. And that’s what all great records do surely? Nice stuff.
