5. The Cure – Wish



The wife’s not happy with me for not picking “Disintegration” but, for me, this is Robert and Porl at their widescreen zenith. “Open” and “End” showed me how important it is to bookend an album, and “Apart” is probably the most under-rated Cure song ever. What I learned from this album is just how emotive and evocative “big” music can be, without going theatrical. If I’m ever feeling uninspired by the guitar, I go back to this record and it slaps me straight out of my rut.
