6. Nine Inch Nails – Year Zero
I can remember listening to this for the first time all the way through and just feeling numb. I was gobsmacked by how incredible this record sounds – everything sounds completely destroyed. I’m bracing myself for the barrage of hate mail that I’m about to receive, spewing “DOWNWARD SPIRAL!”, but this – for me – is Trent Reznor’s magnum opus. This is the record that gave me my “if it makes a sound, put it through a distortion pedal” philosophy of recording. Apparently, Allesandro Cortini puts everything through Soundtoys Decapitator… EVERYTHING! That’s dedication to decimation!
