2. Einstürzende Neubauten – Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T.
Blixa Bargeld is my spirit animal. You The Living really owe everything we are to Neubauten; no-one else has made music that sounds this destroyed, and yet this nuanced and, sometimes, beautiful. I could have picked any Neubauten album, really, but I’ve got a great story about this one in particular: The Sunday before Natasha and I got married, our bridesmaid (Natasha’s best friend from Canada, Liz) gave us our wedding present: three hits each of acid from the very centre of the blotting paper. We eventually ended up in Thamesmead, looking for the centre of the universe (of course), but on our journey we visited a record store in Greenwich where I found this album. The shop assistant asked if I wanted to try it before I bought it, but I was in no condition to attempt to play a vinyl record, so I just said “it’s Neubauten – it’s supposed to sound bloody awful!”. That, and “Armenia” and the title track are worth the admission price alone!
