X Ray Spex Tribute Compilation AlbumPermanent Wave is a network of feminist artists and activists who are trying to challenge gender inequality as it manifests itself in art, politics, and our personal lives.

Some of the artists working under the “Permanent Wave” banner came together to record a compilation album of X Ray Spex covers in the name of Poly styrene who, as Louder Than War readers will know, we lost nearly a year ago due to breast cancer.

All proceeds from the sale of the album will be going to a very apt cause, the “sweet relief” fund for musicians, an organisation which provides financial assistance to musicians who are struggling to make ends meet while facing illness, disability, or age-related problems.

At the centre of the compilation, inevitably, is X Ray Spex’s “Oh Bondage! Up Yours!”. This version is by New Jersey punk / indie band Titus Andronicus. However this isn’t the Titus Andronicus you’ll be familiar with as on this occasion Patrick Stickles (♂), the bands usual vocalist, has passed over vocals duty to former Titus Andronicus guitarist Amy Klein (♀). Bringing things full circle, when Amy left Titus Andronicus she moved on to launch Permanent Wave itself.

The album can be bought here for $10

Guy is a former full time member of the Louder Than War editorial team, who's since moved on to pastures new. Music's been a large part of his life since he first stumbled across Peel on his tranny as a fifteen year old. His whole approach to music was learnt from Peel in fact, which includes having as inclusive a taste in music as possible. Guy devotes most of his time looking for new music & although he's been known to say "the only good music is new music" he pretty much accepts this is bollocks. Favourite band The Minutemen.
