your cassette pet: time for the trad demo to change?

It’s the rock n roll rite of passage- handing over the demo.

It’s also something that is really appreciated if you are a writer…a real compliment that anyone really cares what you think of their music and hopes you can communicate it to the wider world.

Every band has done it- for every tiny group that disappears into the ether there is a young Noel Gallagher handing me the first Oasis demo on Whitworth St in Manchester when the band started, several Stone Roses demos and cassettes and CDs all shoved into boxes from over the years that read like a roll call of modern music.

What was once cassettes have for years been CDs and recently seven inch vinyl singles which makes me think that surely bands would be better served by giving out business cards with their soundcloud/youtube and facebook on.

For one it would save the band hard earned money in giving away singles and CDs that they could sell and it would give the writer all the information they needed at their fingertips straight away and ready to copy and paste over for their websites etc.

These days more people than ever are in bands and time is tight…going through a pile of cards is faster than getting the CD player working again and saves you money…
