Watch This: New Video by White Hills

Watch a new video by psych / space rock kings White Hills, released to help raise awareness of the long running band’s seventh studio album “So,You Are… So You’ll Be due out on 19th August in Europe.

There’s a good chance that, being Louder Than War readers, you first heard about White Hills through their connection with Julian Cope who, back in the band’s early days (2005) released a remixed version of the their debut on his own Fuck Off & Di label, titled They’ve Got Blood Like We’ve Got Blood.

Since then White Hills have come an awful long way & they’re now one of the most well respected bands on the psych rock scene. They’ve honed & perfected their own special blend of wigged out freak infused psych / space rock to the point of intoxication. Live they create a breathtaking storm of grooves, riffs, breakdowns & the kind of guitar based technical flourishes & noodlings that only a band of their experience can have. If you were watching them & weren’t enjoying it so much you might consider them showing off.

Hardly a week goes by without another psych rock festival being announced these days so in vogue is the genre. I think most of the bands playing at any of those festivals will admit that to a certain extent they’ve been influenced by White Hills.

Quoting from the press release the new album:

“…is their most concentrated blast of psychedelic interstellar rock to date. Building on the solid foundations laid by last year’s excellent Frying On This Rock, they went back to BC Studios, Brooklyn to record once more with Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans), emerging with a concentrated blast of White Hills at their fullest potential…”.

Which brings us to the video for the track that opens the album, ‘In Your Room’. And what an opener it is! It positively crunches in before settling down into a swamp of vocals, drum & guitar magic before ending in their trademark insane blast of calculated guitar abuse.

The video was directed by bassist and vocalist, Ego Sensation who spoke to our friends at The Quietus about the meaning of the video:

“It’s a journey into the theatre of the mind. The mind can become one’s ‘room’ – a place that might be comfortable yet stagnant and limiting. It can become a nightmare of delusional, faceless fears if not checked by awareness, curiosity and compassion. So much discord stems from individuals placing too much importance on their own wants and inner feelings and too little interest in the outside world. If you are greedy, self-obsessed, fearful, etc, your experience of the world will be exactly that. So You Are… So You’ll Be.”

Guy is a former full time member of the Louder Than War editorial team, who's since moved on to pastures new. Music's been a large part of his life since he first stumbled across Peel on his tranny as a fifteen year old. His whole approach to music was learnt from Peel in fact, which includes having as inclusive a taste in music as possible. Guy devotes most of his time looking for new music & although he's been known to say "the only good music is new music" he pretty much accepts this is bollocks. Favourite band The Minutemen.
