Much to Louder Than War’s Ian Critchley’s pleasure, psychedelic noise makers Mals Totem have just released a new video.
Mals Totem first came to my attention a couple of months back with the release of their EP entitled … well … EP. In my review I compared Mals Totem to:
“Biffy Clyro, Coheed and Cambria and Alien Ant Farm, only knocked up a notch or seven.”
However, having now listened to their new video ‘The Machine’, I feel I may have sold the band short with that statement.
Their sound is actually far more than merely “up a notch or seven” from those bands. Mals Totem are exactly how Jeff Buckley and his band would have sounded had they started their musical career in the modern day.
The Machine combines the ground breaking vocal ability of Dave Vives with crushing guitars, pounding drums, and pulsating bass lines.
But it’s not all positives with this band as there is one major thing that puts me off Mals Totem, which would not have been drawn to my attention had it not been for this video.
Dave’s pants. They’re fucking ridiculous.
The video is filmed live at the Berklee College of music and works as a bonus track for any who loved the E.P. For those who haven’t heard the band before, check this video, ignore the leggings, and then go and get hold of their music.
