‘One night on my way home from the pub I got chased by a guy with a baseball bat, he was off his head and told me he was Bat Man. I joked to the boys the next day that the only difference between this guy and the real thing was a few quid in the bank and an expensive suit…’
Bat Man delivers a perfect one-two punch of punk aggro and pop culture pastiche. Wrapping social commentary around a hopped-up take on the classic theme tune riff, this deliciously short (but not so sweet) track also manages to serve up some top-tier Dead Freights lyrics like ‘you’d better fucking recognise leather when it’s weaponised’ within it’s tense two minute run time. Like most good things in life it leaves you wanting more.
The accompanying video fits this sonic aesthetic like a (leather) glove. A gritty, back-alley comic book where vigilante justice takes on a distinctly threatening aspect and the Bat Symbol reads ‘Eat The Rich’. It’s not entirely clear who is the villain and who is the hero, but maybe that’s the point. Maybe it’s not enough to be Bruce Wayne by day and the man with the bat by night anymore.
Dead Freights will be joining The Libertines on their UK tour next month, get tickets here.
