Viva le Pink ‘London Crawlin’ EP (Diablo Records)

Debut release from Viva Le Pink, the name refers to the well inked front woman Missy Le Pink of this London three piece who has been able to call on the not inconsiderable talents of both Terry Edwards (The Specials) on horns and Phil Doyle (Klingonz) on the obligatory double bass.

Missy was previously known as Kiria, who previously described herself as “the love child of Marilyn Monroe and Ziggy Stardust”, and also fronted the wonderfully named Suck Baby Suck but has now channelled her music to follow her business;

She is the owner of Missy Le Pink’s Tattoo Tonic and as such no doubt has a direct link with her potential audience; and that audience should be more than happy with this three track EP, which includes two of her own compositions, ”˜Hell Kitty’ the gem of this release sees Miss Le Pink coo salaciously “the Devil is a woman, and she wants to let you in”, whilst Terry Edwards produces some downright dirt sax refrains, and the rockabilly stomp of ”˜Queen O’Jack’ in which she whips up a hog slappin storm whilst the guitar cries country with the best of them, whilst Missy defends her roots on the wrong side of the tracks.

The final offering ”˜Pink Elephants’ is a cover of the 1959 Willy Willette track, in which Missy celebrates the demon booze; you will recognise the lyric before the tune ”˜show me the way to go home, I am tired and I want to go to bed’…

With the current trend for all things rock ”˜n’ roll, and the rabid support heaped upon the likes of Imelda May and The Noisetttes, there is certainly room for Missy Le Pink, and on this confident release she stakes a rootin tootin claim for your bequiffed affection, and with cover art work by Sol Rac she provides the flash to tattoo your heart.

Phil Newall is 47, from The Wirral - he earns his living not writing about music nor playing music...though sorely wishes he could. He was fortunate enough to see many of the first generation punk bands when they played the U18's matinee shows at Eric's, Liverpool. As an attendee at Eric's he was exposed to punk rock, dub reggae, art rock, and all manner of weirdness; as a customer at Probe Records he was variously served and scowled at by Pete Wylie and Pete Burns - he has written for Record Collector, Whisperin & Hollerin, and Spiral Scratch and wanted to write a book detailing the Liverpool punk scene; however with 'Head-On' Julian Cope beat him to it...and frankly did a much better job.
