Viv Albertine defaces punk exhibition

Viv Albertine defaces exhibitionViv Albertine has defaced an information board at the British Library, part of their Punk 1976-78 exhibition.

Albertine, guitarist in The Slits and author of memoir Clothes, Music, Boys, was speaking at an event with music journalist Jon Savage.

The board described the cultural impact and legacy of bands including The Clash, Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks but didn’t mention any of the women or female bands who had also contributed to the counter-culture and music movement.

Albertine amended the board to highlight bands including The Slits, X-Ray Spex and Siouxsie and the Banshees before signing her name and adding ‘what about the women!!’. Images of the amended board have been circulated on Twitter and Albertine herself tweeted to confirm the signature and changes to the board were her work.
