Yet another release from Villy Raze, who’s prodigious output must surely now demand the services of a dedicated intern merely to catalogue the stuff!

His own website describes his work as “A mixture of folk, punk, pop and ska. Lyrically macabre, powerful song-writing and edgy delivery. Youthful wisdom and a unique storytelling quality.”…a more succinct description would be schizophrenic, as Villy takes us from the euphoric, intelligent punk of The Dead Class complete with songs about cannibalism, consumerism, and deranged psychopaths, to the perfect pop of Sheepy for whom Villy plays bass, and to the recently formed Wanweird which is genuinely beyond categorisation, a bizarre mix of twisted punk psycedelia drenched in mescaline bundled together in tracks that rival early Extreme Noise Terror in brevity.

And then he goes and releases ‘Ignite’, a 2tk EP containing Franny Asprin remixes – Mr Asprin being a certain Franny Griffiths from resurgent 90’s chart bothers Space, who also lend Villy the talents of Phil Hartley (Bass) and Allan Jones (Drums).

‘Ignite’ is a gloriously dark, pulsating dance masterpiece that had me thinking about DJ Miss Kitten; its built around a strident drum pattern, a brooding bass and uplifting keyboard tones that hint of ‘Replicas’ era Numan while Villy’s vocal melts into the surging extended mix.

‘Ignite’ is accomplished, and would easily fit into the sleek soundtrack of any glass and chrome city centre venue, the sort of venue that would refuse Villy entry for looking like a punk rock urchin.

Play it loud, allow ‘Ignite’ to envelope you, and you get the feeling that you’re about to do something epic; with the right exposure ‘Ignite’ could easily transform into a huge dance hit.

Phil Newall is from The Wirral - he earns his living not writing about music nor playing music...though sorely wishes he could. He was fortunate enough to see many of the first generation punk bands when they played the U18's matinee shows at Eric's, Liverpool. As an attendee at Eric's he was exposed to punk rock, dub reggae, art rock, and all manner of weirdness; as a customer at Probe Records he was variously served and scowled at by Pete Wylie and Pete Burns - he has written for Record Collector, Whisperin & Hollerin, and Spiral Scratch and wanted to write a book detailing the Liverpool punk scene; however with 'Head-On' Julian Cope beat him to it...and frankly did a much better job.
