Various – Come Stay With Me
Come Play With Me
Out on 4th July
Leeds label Come Play With Me release a new compilation to support artists impacted by COVID-19.
The terrible human cost of COVID-19 has rightly been at the forefront of people’s minds, but artists have also been struggling as regular sources of income have almost totally dried up during lockdown.
The business model of the industry these days is most acts need to play live to make enough cash to survive, but social distancing has put paid to that – which is why Leeds based label Come Play With Me have put together this new compilation.
13 Leeds based bands have contributed remixes, demos and live tracks to this record released on eco vinyl, and all the proceeds will be shared between them.
The label’s star turn Team Picture open with a banging Crulligan remix of Handsome Machine, Jasmine offers some sultry sax-driven jazz, English Teacher’s punchy The Treacle Trap Door has a touch of The Sundays or All About Eve about it, and Magic Mountain’s raucous live version at Mabgate Bleach of The Shitty Beatles is a delicious slice of indie powerpop with a big chorus.
The standout is rapper Dialect’s very contemporary Come Up delivered in a distinctly Yorkshire accent reeking of northern power that would make Jon Snow’s heart swell with pride.
Sometimes this sort of compilation can be a bit dull, but this diverse group of artists act as a reminder just how strong the often overlooked Leeds scene is. And the bonus ball is that buying this record will help them keeping doing what they do.
