Louder Than War look at the new MDMA wonder drug, Molly, sweeping the United States right now and in particular investigate the media attention its already generated.Â
It seems MDMA has come back big style in the states in the form of what’s known as ‘Molly’. Even Madonna’s been referencing it so it’s obviously not underground any more. Indeed, its rise in use over the last 12 months has seen the substance get regular attention in the US press and media and it’s become quite popular among the party people of America. So what does this mean for the UK, are we about accommodate it over here?
Molly is being sold on the premise of it being a much finer and cleaner version of MDMA, even more so than ecstasy ever was. Molly, short for ‘Molecular’, has cultivated this reputation as it’s an additive and filler free super de-lux version of E. Indeed it makes those ‘doves’, ‘new yorker’s’ and other faves from 89-92 look like its poor relatives. Coming in made up capsules and selling for 15$ a point (or 0.1 of a gram) its also claimed that it doesn’t give users that usual come down scenario familiar after a night on E, with a landing as soft as its take off. It all sounds rather too good to be true doesn’t it?
Speaking to a frequent user of Molly earlier this year (a 26yr old portrait photographer based in New York named Caleb) one website got the low down on it. Caleb said,
“It’s like emotional psychedelia, but it has none of the negative, intimidating effects that other drugs, even weed, can have, It’s a perfect drug.” Some what of a connoisseur Caleb seeks out Molly that isn’t a powder but that’s an uncrushed yellow-amber crystal fresh from the chemist. (According to Morris, “People have this false idea that a powder is somehow inherently more pure than a tablet. But once a tablet’s been pressed, it can’t be adulterated, whereas a powder can be stepped on or cut by every single person who touches it.”) If the photographer buys from someone he does not know, he will always insist on opening the cap up and testing a few grains with his tongue “If it’s pure,” he says, “it makes your cheeks tense up, which is the weirdest thing. But that’s how you know.” If the dealer won’t let him try it first he “doesn’t fuck around with it”.
Molly also seems to be a popular substance used among the Hip Hop / Rap community and especially those in the Southern States with artists like ‘Gunplay'(rapper who’s part of ex C.O Rick  Ross’s ‘Mayback Music’ crew & who’s also the guy who got slapped at the BET rap awards by ’50 cent’ cent and entourage) who was asked on US radio about using Molly: “Of course man, that’s the best thing in life man, being out with a little baggie of that and just dabbing in it all night man, its all you need”. Explaining how he first came across the substance he said “when I first got given it I saw it in rock form with that yellow tinge and without the cap, to me it looked like crack cocaine so I’m starting to think what the fuck!, some one trying to play me here but my man says ‘nah, you got to squeeze it brother, break it into powder’ and after that it was like, Oh Man…”
Also courting headlines with Molly was everyone’s favourite ‘granny of pop’ Madonna at this years Miami Ultra Music Festival when she made a reference to the substance with this feeble attempt at ‘getting down with the kids’ when she shouted out:
“In my world, the words ‘music’ and ‘dance’ are not separated, OK?” the singer said. “I have a few questions for you … How many people in this crowd have seen Molly? Are you ready to dance? Are you ready to sweat? Are you ready to make some noise? Are you ready for the next DJ, motherfuckers?”
Canadian superstar DJ / producer Deadmau5 called her an ‘idiot’ and accused her of “pandering” to fans of electronic dance music (EDM) and dredging up “the shit that really held EDM down for years”.
On his blog he went on to say “I’m not perfect, but I do know that I am at the very least morally obligated not to blatantly inflict or advocate anything that’s detrimental to society, others health, etc. We’ve taken EDM so far in the past decade, so goddamned far. It really hurts me to see rampant ADVOCATION of extreme bullshit lifestyles.”
Deadmau5 called on artists and fans to take responsibility for their actions. “If you can be pandered with MDMA references, then at least pander your own ass with a good sense of responsibility which will enable you to make the personal choices that are right for YOU.”
Madge responded with “From one mouse to another, I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called Have You Seen Molly written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album.” Deadmau5 replied: “Fair enough, I was just voicing my concerns as  I usually do. +1 respect for clearing it up personally”. Only for the ‘Dot Cotton’ of pop to name her latest album ‘MDNA’, in another one of her sad little ‘wink-wink nudge-nudge’ references to the substance.
But how can it be clean when its man made in the first place ⦠as with E it all started out great initially, the consumer got a good deal in terms of purity and what it did and for how long, until the quality started to decline quicker than its falling retail price. But the big questions are will it hit our shores and what could it mean for the kids, our music-scene and its use / abuse in the UK ?
