The Hit Factory festival in London which was in Hyde Park In london on 11 July and a celebration of the Stock, Aiken and Waterman pop machine featuring the cast of long forgotten types like Rick Astley, Jason Thingy, Hazell Somebody, Sonia Something, Lonnie O’Dear, Sinitta Burgers as well as Lee, Claire, Lisa, Faye and H from the legendary Steps as well as Pepsi and Shirlie and loads of other pre X Factor pop heroes has been cancelled.

Promoters are blaming the weather which has been pretty hideous this summer but all other Hyde park concerts are still on and the nearby Guildford Festival is still running this weekend. We imagine it is the weather but some are saying ticket sales may not have been that great, although who are we to doubt the spectacle of seeing Rick Astley in a field?

It does bring into question the durability of so called pop.

These singers were BBC radio one Smashey and Nicey staples at the time and like a lot of the stuff played on the radio now they have zero durability. Why can’t the mainstream media mix it up? bands they didn’t play until they really had to like the Stone Roses and Nirvana are now legendary- the PWL stuff remains a footnote.

  1. Not exactly a Waterman catalogue fan, but this is a load of speculative shite. It stands to reason that the grounds are still mangled after Wireless at the weekend, and this is a shitey way to crowbar in a dig about a chapter of cheesy music you’re just not that arsed about. Pop exists, get over it. Give these people their fun.

  2. Think about it logically. They have many shows on the same park up until mid- August. This includes the Olympics opening and closing shows. If this weather continues and the ground gets in to a state beyond recovery in will have a massive knock on. And its still raining today. Another 20,000 feet on this won’t help…..

  3. It does prove the point there was as much shite then as there is now..Pop culture has always thrown up throw away pap. Punk/New Wave/Industrial/Gothic/Baggy-Madchester/Britpop all had great subcultures and music aided and abetted by some good Indi Labels. But we have now lost most of the indi labels. And the dynamics controlling the industry have resigned us to reality type popstars/x factor pap and tax avoiders like Barlow..Or worse still reunions like Kiss….
