Top Ten Songs That Say ‘I Love You’, For My Wife…Top Ten songs that say I Love You, for my wife…

Compiled by Ged Babey on the occasion of his wife Jooles birthday. A very special birthday, but it would be impolite to divulge a lady’s age.

“Thats no lady… “ says Ged but “Happy Birthday babes, these are dedicated to you and to make up for all the time I spend on the computer doing stuff for Louder Than War when I should be attending to your needs and doing domestic shit”.  He is an old romantic.

Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers – I Love You

From the album LAMF which of course stands for Love And Marriage Forever *. Thunders getting soppy, “ I’m playin’ it straight for once, cos baby I love you” he slurs as he cranks out some beautiful sloppy guitar.

The Ramones did a good version too:

Buzzcocks – Love You More

“It’s in my blood to always love you more….” Always the most romantic of the punk bands. I bought this for my wife on her twenty-first together with a 7 inch of The Adverts No Time To Be 21.

Magazine – I Love You, You Big Dummy

It did cross my mind to pick Permafrost but ‘I wanna drug you and fuck you on the Permafrost’ is perhaps not Howards most tender lyrical couplet.

Elvis Costello – I Want You

Jooles is far more of an Elvis Costello fan than myself but I have to agree that this is one of the greatest love songs ever written.

Psychedelic Furs – She is Mine

Richard Butler always came over in his lyrics as a bit of a chauvinist but this is one of his strangest and most wonderful love songs. Ok it doesn’t actually say I love you in it but it does say; “She’s making me a pair of shoes so I can run away….and “I called her Fab and Mrs Fish..” which amount pretty much to the same thing.

Elvis Costello – My Funny Valentine

“Is your figure less then Greek, is your mouth a little weak … ” always has Mrs B glancing my way and sniggering.

Frank Wilson – Do I Love You (indeed I do)

It’s not all punk-rock in the Babey household, thanks mainly to Mrs B’s more eclectic taste. Have grown to love this.

Sonic Youth – Superstar (original by the Carpenters)

Painfully sad and beautiful love song reimagined to perfection by a band who very occaisonally make records this great. Makes me and Jooles cry so we can’t look at each other when its playing.

Jack Off Jill –  Lovesong  (original by the Cure)

Jooles and I agree that this is as good, if not better than the original, cos basically it has a bit more bollocks and sounds like Hole covering it.

The Lurkers – Ooh Ooh I Love You

Wanted to choose Sleep On Diamonds Forever from the Lurkers second album as it has the line “Just to show ya how much I love-ya. / See ya tomorrow with a bottle of vodka. / Maybe later go uptown /  See some group and hang around.”  Which is about as romantic & sophisticated as I used to get back in the 70’s and 80’s … and my wife will probably tell you that not much has changed. Sadly no one has put it on Youtoob, so this will have to do.

Love you Jooles. Tried to include some songs you like on the theme (there aren’t ten cool birthday songs!) and not just ones I like but no room for Wild Is The Wind or Saturation (by Die Cheerleader) I’m afraid… anyway…

Love You. xxx

*    (Have to credit where I nicked that from…) LAMF of course stands for Like A Mother Fucker but our friend Stuart McGregor once convinced another mate, a young and naïve Tony Keall, that his Thunders tattoo stood for Love And Marriage Forever.

All words by Ged Babey. More work by Ged on Louder Than War can be found in his author’s archive.

Ged Babey is 56. from Southampton, has written since 1985 for Sound Info, Due South, various fanzines and websites, contributed to Record Collector magazine and was sole author of 'Punk Throwback' fanzine -the name of which was taken from an insult hurled at him by the singer with a young band he managed for a while. Ged believes that all good music and art has a connection with punk rock.

  1. great list! But with 2 elvis costello songs i would have expected “She”. Maybe the most beautiful tribute to a wife/gf ever written.
