While ‘Heroes’ is the prime Bowie / Fripp combination, it perhaps is in danger of becoming dulled through repetition. The guitarist had an equally powerful influence on what many consider Bowie’s last truly great album, Scary Monsters, contributing major guitar parts to the title track and also the album’s second single Fashion, a great, loping piece of mutant funk into which Fripp periodically beams in as though from another dimension, his solo sounding like someone wrestling open a rusted-shut iron door. This got on Top of the Pops and all the TV music shows of the day – golden years for music indeed.
