Top 10 albums from ex-Mansun frontman Paul Draper – Number 7 – Violator (Depeche Mode)

Draper - Violator

I went to see Depeche Mode on tour in about 1991. I really loved their early albums but this is the one where they really hit it perfectly. Again, it’s my love of synthesisers. And again, this album was produced by Flood, my favourite producer. Sonically, this album is absolutely brilliant – it sounds incredible. Tracks like “World In My Eyes” are brilliant. Depeche Mode are one of my favourite ever bands. The songwriting and the production and the analogue synthesisers all hit a perfect moment here and it was the highlight of their career.

They were docked alongside Millennium Pier at the time and had just witnessed a blistering set by the world's only Parliamentary Rock Band, MP4. Besides MP4, Martin cites The Smiths, Libertines, Stone Roses, Billy Bragg, Belle and Sebastian, Art Brut, The Cure, Jamie T and Bloc Party amongst his favourite musical artists. He lives in Camberwell, works in Parliament, supports Tranmere Rovers, loves Coronation Street and once ran a marathon.
