Title Fight – Hyperview (Anti)

The new album from Pennsylvanian indie punks Title Fight sounds like a derivative cash-in to Joshua Hart.
I’ll be honest with you guys. Hyperview is not good. It’s not anything approaching good.
Hyperview is the prime example of what happens when you cross boring, hookless, Cure-lite indie rock with dour, self-serious American suburbanites. It is everything that is wrong with “hype hardcore.”
That’s kind of a shame, because Title Fight, an indie/punk rock outfit from Pennsylvania, have actually put out some OK material. Floral Green, their second album, was actually quite good, managing to balance the softer and more abrasive sides of their sound.
I can only wonder why they’ve decided to forgo any semblance of heaviness in favor of lazily put-together indie shlop.
By lazy, I mean that every song uses some of the most hackneyed, cliched chord progressions that every other tumblr-core band uses. It’s as if Whirr, Title Fight, and The Pains of Being Pure at heart all got together, listened to Spiderland and then Loveless, and then made it their life’s work to bore the entire planet.
Let’s take a look at the track Mrahc. I listened to it for about 30 seconds before recognizing it as Boys Don’t Cry with added fuzz.
There you go. That’s it. You’ve basically listened to the entire album. The only time any song deviates from this formula is on Chlorine, which sounds like somebody spilling a glass of water onto a Fenix TX tape and then playing it in a car stereo.
This record makes me feel bad for a few different people. I feel bad for GQ and NPR,for hyping up nothing. I feel bad for their publicist, who has to work really hard so publications and hype nothing, and I feel bad for the pop punk kids who will buy this album expecting Floral Green and get a Smiths demo instead.
I don’t feel bad for Title Fight, they’ve found a trendy sound and it’s making them money.
