9. The Residents – Third Reich and Roll (1976)

Shend ‘At a time when some of my friends (not me obviously!) had discovered pot and were sitting cross-legged in circles on someone’s floor listening to Gong, this LP popped into my life. I’d been lent it by some hippies in Leamington Spa who we used to visit once a month for some reason (why, eludes me now) and it was the weirdest thing I’d ever heard. Like a nightmare of sweets, it scared the shit out of me but made me want some more. I remember playing it around a chum’s house in Stratford Upon Avon late at night very loud whilst in the aforementioned cross-legged circle position and a tenant in the next room suddenly burst in during the 18 minute long,  ‘Hitler Was Vegetarian’ and screamed at the top of her voice. “I don’t know why you don’t all just stab each other!” Music can create powerful emotions in some people.’
