The Mighty Stef kicks off the New Year with a headlining gig at Dublin’s Whelans on the 31st of January, and Louder than War has a pair to give away.
2014 looks set to be an exciting year for the band with the release of new single ‘Nightwatchman Of The Iveagh Flats’ and the forthcoming release of their 4th full length album, produced by Alain Johannes (Mark Lanegan / Queens Of The Stone Age / Arctic Monkeys).
Initially a solo venture for lead singer Stefan Murphy, The Mighty Stef has over the years evolved into fully fledged band and settled on theie current line-up of Gary Lonergan on bass, Daniel Fitzpatrick on guitars/keyboards and Brian Farrell on drums/percussion, taken over from the recently departed Brian Gallagher now of Sonance Hotel, who are the support act for the upcoming TMS show .
They make a euphoric experimental rock n roll racket with elements of gothic, punk, electronic, and folk. They are renowned for their intense and exciting live performances which has garnered them a loyal following here in Ireland, and allowed them to build up a strong cult following abroad from extensive touring in the UK, Europe and America.
That cult standing seems set to change with the release of their ambitious new album if last November’s The Iveagh Flats EP is anything to go by. A three track EP on download and limited edition vinyl that showcased their ability at intertwining all those previously mentioned elements, the straight up Rock N’ Roll of The Nightwatchman, the infectious Vampire, Hold Me Tight, and the experimental epic The Hardship. The EP received mass critical praise and the track Vampire, Hold Me Tight garnered lots of national Airplay. The forthcoming album is provisionally due for release this coming May.
Over the years they have shared the stage with The Fall, Bob Geldof, Flogging Molly and Masters of Reality, and recorded with Shane Macgowan (The Pogues) Cait O’ Riordain (The Pogues/The Radiators), Ronnie Drew (The Dubliners) and Dave King (Flogging Molly). They have been compared to luminaries such as Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and Echo and The Bunnymen, but they have an idiosyncratic sound and style of their own, courtesy of Stefan’s bluesy soulful Irish brogue, and their astute and passionate storytelling. Tales of tribulation and everyday elation.
