the mercury Awards pie charts- great at spotlighting some genres but don’t bother if you are rock

The Mercury Prize shortlist was a really good last night- full of good music but there were the usual gaps.

As ever rock music was totally ignored unless you count Royal Blood- nothing noisier and more extreme no matter how ground breaking would ever get a look in and that creeping feeling that this is an award for a soundtrack to an Islington dinner party and a chance for the well off to eat sushi and agonise over what is the most Guardian approved choice hangs over the whole affair.

On the plus side it’s great to see Young Fathers get the break but still strange to see the amount of time and space that an award that represents a tiny fraction of UK music get s much TV and media coverage.
