4th March 2013

After releasing their debut EP ‘New Moore Island’ back in 2010, alt-folk seven-piece, The Mariner’s Children, have returned with a powerful new EP. Allied to that we’re also premiering the bands new video for the track “In My Bed” which you can see down at the foot of this review.

Comprised of members of bands such as Peggy Sue, Laura Marling, Sons Of Noel And Adrian, Alessi’s Ark, and Eyes & No Eyes, it is safe to say that we had anticipated great things from this bunch of talented musicians. Now, with the release of their second EP ‘Sycamore EP’, it is obvious that they have truly exceeded these expectations.

The four tracks that complete ‘Sycamore EP’ are a fine collection indeed. Themes of love and death are prominent throughout the thought-provoking lyrics, and make for a kind of sad romanticism. Delicate and modest melodies quickly turn into a storm of string riffs, drum beats and roaring vocal harmonies.

The title track opens the EP which fluctuates from a naturalistic folk ballad to an explosive Arcade Fire-esque foot-stomper. The tempo slows down for the dark, melodic ‘Wolves Within the Woods’, comprised of subtle yet haunting lyrics and harmonies. ‘In My Bed’ (see video below) uplifts us again with some powerfully grand and fast-paced rootsy folk. Disheartened strings and a sombre drum beat, accompanied by melancholy lyrics such as, “We spent a lifetime building bridges, but now’s the time to burn them down, I will swim among the ashes until I drown”, really bring the listener back down to Earth during final track, ‘Bridges’.

Encompassing traditional and dramatic British folk with a slightly modern twist, The Mariner’s Children create an exceptional, heart-wrenching EP. ‘Sycamore EP’ is a morbidly romantic yet very poignant collection of songs that should be appreciated by anyone who has loved, lost or ever truly felt any kind of emotion.

We’re stoked that we’re being allowed to premiere the band’s new video for the track In My Bed (see above). The video borrows heavily from silent film footage & as such matches the bands lovingly crafted songs perfectly.
