Louder Than War Bomb Rating 4.5

Andy Brown finds a little slice of heaven on Earth with the brand-new single from Leeds indie-pop act, The Lodger. He shares his thoughts for Louder Than War.

When The Lodger returned earlier this year, they delivered one of the most effortlessly gorgeous indie-pop albums that I’d heard in quite some time. The band successfully channelled the charms of Orange Juice, New Order and The Go-Betweens. A big claim, I know, yet Cul-De-Sac of Love really is worthy of such praise.

This month sees the Leeds-based three-piece return with a new non-album single, Bewildered. The joyous McCartney-like melody creates a hypnotic, wholly beautiful spell: three-and-a-half minutes of 12-string strums and emotive pop perfection. Piano, organ and lush harmonies add to the sense of occasion. “Love isn’t complicated,” swoons vocalist Ben Siddall as the melody blooms, “we’re just not that smart.”

The Lodger wear their passion for pop on their sleeves, with hooks and harmonies that wouldn’t sound out of place on an ELO album. Siddall’s songwriting embraces melody and melancholy in equal measure and it’s this tried and tested combination that makes Bewildered so irresistible. While some songs require a little time, Bewildered really is love at first listen.

You can find The Lodger on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Bandcamp.
