The Libertines
Sign to Virgin EMI Records
In Sri Racha in Thailand earlier today (Friday 5th December) The Libertines – Peter Doherty, Carl Barât, John Hassall and Gary Powell – signed a new worldwide recording contract with Virgin EMI Records.
The band and management (Adrian Hunter of Wolfbray Management and David Bianchi of Various Artists Management) took a boat to Ko Si Chang Island and together signed the deal.
Says Peter: “I don’t know what to say, I’m so happy. It was a beautiful day.”
Says Carl: “After everything we have been through The Albion sails on course again, I couldn’t be more excited.”
Says Gary: “Having somebody (Mike smooth Smith) working with the band was – and is an important factor in the band’s ‘new’ evolution. He not only understands the band but he understands us all as individuals with an emotional dynamic to add to the overall picture which was a major factor in the band’s decision to sign with Virgin Records.”
Says John: “For me this signals a new era and a new beginning for The Libertines.”
Mike Smith President of Music at Virgin EMI, who has a long working relationship with the band, having originally signed them to EMI Publishing in 2002, had this to say: “The Libertines started an inferno that blazed through music at the start of the 21st Century and their reunion this year has been nothing less than spectacular.   Carl, Pete, Gary and John are in the form of their lives and making some fantastic new music together.   I am thrilled that Virgin/EMI can be a part of their future”.
The Libertines were formed by Peter Doherty and Carl Barât in 1997 and have released two albums ‘Up The Bracket’ (2002) and ‘The Libertines’ (2004).  The band split in 2004 and Barât formed Dirty Pretty Things while Doherty went on to front Babyshambles. The Libertines first got back together in 2010 to play at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. They reconvened earlier this year and sold out Hyde Park British Summer Time, three nights at London Alexandra Palace and headlined festivals across Europe. The Libertines are currently writing material for their third studio album to be released in 2015.
Peter Doherty is currently residing at the Hope Rehabilitation Centre in Thailand. Peter wishes to use his influence to help other struggling addicts and together with Hope is starting a trust funding treatment initiative – Peter Doherty Hope Initiative (PDHI).
