The Cool Greenhouse: Alexa!
We are proud to present… the new single from new kids on the lo-fi, proper-indie, post-punk, weirdo block, The Cool Greenhouse – (a cross between Sleaford Mods and The Fall – for those who need a sign-post that states the bleedin’ obvious..) Treading the fine line between ‘novelty’ and self-deprecating genius, is this the 2020 equivalent to Jobseeker or How I Wrote Elastic Man? Ged Babey cogitates – the dirty bastard.
Indisputably, the most powerful song ever made. Alexa! can phone your mum. Alexa! can set your alarm for ungodly hours. Alexa! is the first song in history capable of racking up its own streams and ordering copies of itself.
This is fuckin’ great. On first listen – another post Sleafords, ‘Talking-over-music is the ‘new rock’n’roll’ band with a shit name. But on second listen… it’s the realisation that Fountains of DC will forever sound dull, dull, dull until they develop a sense of humour. Sarcasm, cynicism and wit are the new ‘soul’. This is a return to proper old-school, truly independent, making-music as mucking-about, taking the piss out of everything nihilism. Not giving a fuck, but having a bit of intelligence…
Simultaneously a modern love song dedicated to the 14% of men who have found themselves aroused by their virtual assistants during lockdown and a characteristically sardonic investigation into the sly corporate invasion of domestic space…
Here is the absolutely shite promotional video … (just listen to the words…)
And there’s only one thing I like more than a stereo-typically subservient female automaton / And that’s a stereo-typically subservient female automaton, that’s unbelievably crap at it’s job, / ‘Cause when you’re asked to play Girl Band / You play the Shangri-las / And when you’re asked to play us / You call a greenhouse suppliers.
Fuckin’ genius! Innit?
I checked out the back catalogue. (the eponymous debut LP came out in March)
They sound like The Fall. Incisive fuckin’ journalism or what! They do though. The C’n’C’s Mithering Fall of barely in tune repetition, repetition, repetition.
A lot of bands say they are influenced by the Fall – but very few get it right – get to the dark heart of the magic realism of aforementioned group. TCG do.
On his Facebook Tom Greenhouse admitted to: doggedly pursuing my bizarre fixation with making overly-long, tuneless, changeless music…
But as their press release says: Alexa! is, above all, a stonker of a tune that further solidifies The Cool Greenhouse’s position as one of the most exciting and innovative bands around.
They can be your ‘surrogate’ Fall if that’s what you want – or just add them to the ever-increasing list of smart new UK bands.
Alexa! Play the new song by the Cool Greenhouse!
