Be Above It (Erol Alkan Rework) – Tame Impala (Modular)
Tame Impala have spent the last 18 months traversing the globe in support of their critically acclaimed 2012 album, ‘Lonerism’. Before returning to Australia they had one final treat from the album up their sleeves – a remix of Be Above It by Erol Alkan. Keith Goldhanger is impressed.
Life can be a bitch when something that might be considered one of the best tracks of the year gets heard as late as November just as people are starting to think about whether or not to start trawling through all the marvellous tunes we’ve all been listening to since 1st January. To avoid such a decision next month I won’t make a list, I’ll just rant on about what a cool piece of music this is.
A bit of background.
I heard this on the radio the other night.
I loved it on first listen.
Then a conversation or two with other people who’d heard it and a week later – just as I was standing astride my transistor radio with fingers ready on the play/ record button, – the music fairies bought it to me via a series of coincidences I won’t go into here.
It’s worth having a listen to the original version.
The loops of noise are a temptation to anyone with a sharp knife and a steady hand – probably why British DJ and producer Erol Alkan got there first (maybe via the same music fairies that wave wands and allow good things to happen).
It’s released as a one sided 12″ for all the cool low trouser hanging DJs, limited to about 1,500 copies and as such will probably disappear so fast that if those secondary ticketing companies were allowed to do so would be sold on as cool records the kids bought but a) changed their minds about wanting a copy or b) didn’t have a copy anyway because they went so fast and got into the hands of people trying to make a fast buck.
No one hearing this for the first time will forget it – it’s a monster of a tune. Epic, Huge, Fandabadozi……..your neighbours will hate it but the cool kids will love it – even as a single it’s worth ranting on and on about so that you’ll all listen to it…
