The gig was billed as ‘Fuck Xmas!’ – Super Fast Girlie Show fucked it hard, real hard; other bands turn heads – Super Fast Girlie Show snap necks; their sound is sheer brutality, a two bass onslaught that in the tight confines of a steaming Mello Mello threatened to engulf the crowd tsunami style.

Pash Coxhill is stood stage right, bass slung low, aside him Phil Hartley, bass slung lower still, behind them barely visible in the gloom drummer Allan Williams, sticks raised; he brings them together and the sound of blitzkrieg ensues…Pash creating a more traditional bass sound, whilst Phil with his array of pedals and gates takes bass in dark directions hither to undiscovered, at times cavernous, at times the reverb suggests the imminent destruction of the very stage he is now frantically leaping about upon.

Super Fast Girlie Show ignore the rock’n’roll rules, this is louder, this is faster – they have created a gloriously dark powerful sound that literally pummels you to the wall, wave upon wave of unrelenting power that makes you feel alive as it envelopes you, seeping into your pores becoming part of your psyche…each ‘song’ is a brief sonic blast, punishing beats, shards of effect driven guitar mayhem as Pash struggles to bellow over the top…song titles like ‘Lube’, ‘Mind Control’ and ‘Freaks’ tell you all you need to know.

Super Fast Girlie Show are about impact, they are taking their primitive bass sound farther than anyone else, they make a truly terrifying howl but what makes them quite so effective is their ability to retain their musicality; it would be easy to crank out sheets of feedback, to batter your audience into submission, the Girlie Show avoid that cul-de-sac by understanding the musical connections between all of us and the beat, and are jaw droppingly impressive as a result.

Super Fast Girlie Show are exploring the possibilities of sub sonic sound, venturing to uncharted regions; Phil Hartley’s bass veering dangerously close to the mythical ‘brown noise’ a ponderously deep sound that arouses, that leaves you wide eyed, flailed by the resonating tones – your animal instincts enflamed, adrenalized feral emotion takes over; the crowd now slam dancing, fists punch the air enjoying the collective feeling of being both alive and being witness to this turn point moment.

After just 25 sweat sodden minutes Super Fast Girlie Show discard their instruments, the shell shocked audience make for the exits looking for familiar reference points as they attempt to assimilate what they were just witness to.

Super Fast Girlie Show – the future of rock’n’roll?

Well, if you like your rock’n’roll to be a raw, even primal life affirming experience then maybe…just maybe

Phil Newall is from The Wirral - he earns his living not writing about music nor playing music...though sorely wishes he could. He was fortunate enough to see many of the first generation punk bands when they played the U18's matinee shows at Eric's, Liverpool. As an attendee at Eric's he was exposed to punk rock, dub reggae, art rock, and all manner of weirdness; as a customer at Probe Records he was variously served and scowled at by Pete Wylie and Pete Burns - he has written for Record Collector, Whisperin & Hollerin, and Spiral Scratch and wanted to write a book detailing the Liverpool punk scene; however with 'Head-On' Julian Cope beat him to it...and frankly did a much better job.
