Sun Ra – 20 CD box set/book on route

Prepare yourself!!

News is reaching us here at LTW, the definitive Sun Ra collection is to be released this summer. The box set entitled ”ËœThe Eternal Myth Revealed Vol.1′ (which suggests there is more on the way”¦) covers the period 1924-1956 and is spread across 20 CD’s with an accompanying book.

The entire collection was compiled by the Director of the Sun Ra Music Archive, Michael D Anderson and contains music, interviews and audio excerpts, plus rare recordings by bands that are said to have influenced Sun Ra.

Anderson has chronologically compiled all 435 tracks, a total of 13hrs of material with extensive accompanying liner notes; Anderson himself describes the release as “a detailed music chronology of every known recording to include Sun Ra as a piano sideman, composer, arranger, vocal coach and his own recordings as a band leader”.

”ËœThe Eternal Myth Revealed Vol.1′ (Transparency) is currently available to pre-order at approx £110 – Release date 18th July 2011

Information on further volumes is not currently available but considering that the leader of the “Arkestra” was musically active up until his death in 1993, we wouldn’t be surprised to see further additions to the series…

Phil Newall is 47, from The Wirral - he earns his living not writing about music nor playing music...though sorely wishes he could. He was fortunate enough to see many of the first generation punk bands when they played the U18's matinee shows at Eric's, Liverpool. As an attendee at Eric's he was exposed to punk rock, dub reggae, art rock, and all manner of weirdness; as a customer at Probe Records he was variously served and scowled at by Pete Wylie and Pete Burns - he has written for Record Collector, Whisperin & Hollerin, and Spiral Scratch and wanted to write a book detailing the Liverpool punk scene; however with 'Head-On' Julian Cope beat him to it...and frankly did a much better job.
