king rockerStewart Lee & Michael Cumming on Soho Radio talking about and playing a selection of music by Robert Lloyd & Nightingales….

… as they near completion of their film, King Rocker, about the man and the band – an attempt to make the world finally realise that this is an artist & band every bit as important, unique & enjoyable as their contemporaries Joy Division, the Smiths and the Fall.

This is bloody brilliant!   Be warned – you need two hours of your valuable leisure time to listen to the whole shebang.

Stewart Lee, you surely know,- the comedian, writer,  one of the greatest living Englishmen,  and Michael Cumming -a name you might not know immediately, but he was the director of Brass Eye, Mark Thomas Product, Toast of London and  so on.

They have almost completed a film about legendary post-punk survivors Robert Lloyd and the Nightingales which I told you about here back in December 2018

This show, originally broadcast on Soho Radio is just a fabulous listen for anyone interested in Midlands punk and post punk history from the Prefects to Dangerous Girls to Duran Duran and Fuzzbox as well of course as the Nightingales.

Basically it’s two blokes talking about their favourite band and playing a chronological playlist of associated tunes.

There’s lots of great trivia and some surprising revelations (the story about Duran Duran for example)  – the importance of Cherry Reds Pillows & Prayers low-price compilation is established,  the Nightingales -Robin Asquith connection revealed, and of course some wonderful music covering the past 40 years of Nightingales (Prefects, New Four Seasons) music.

Lee and Cumming are of course naturally funny and there are some great soundbites like; ” People used to stink in the late 70’s!” And the realisation that decades prior its invention “John Peel was Spotify-on-shuffle”

So here it is, the complete show, shared with the blessing of the hosts and a big thanks to Soho Radio for making it publicly available.
