Standon Calling 2021 – festival preview

Standon Calling have announced the first wave of bands for this year’s three-day event in the fields of Lordship Standon in Hertfordshire. Keith Goldhanger writes almost the same preview as he did a year ago.

Will it happen or will it not?

Let’s just assume we’ve all had the Jabs and that my mate has made more than one funky face shield (you need to see this new fabulous festival accessory) and that over the weekend the sun shines over the land that holds one of the best small festivals the UK has to offer so we can look back on the past year as just a short period of our lives that held us ransom to Netflix, 6 music , Radio X, mates Podcasts and 1980’s John Peel shows on YouTube.

It was said a year ago and so it’ll have to be said again. HOT CHIP at this festival could be the best thing ever. If that’s not enough to tempt us to look for our tents and hope that we don’t have to go to a camping shop in order to stash up on some pegs then PRIMAL SCREAM and BASTILLE must be tempting for anyone that’s not been any further than walking distance from their front door since March 2020.

Many of our favourites that some of us still haven’t yet had the pleasure to witness live are also booked to appear. Lynkxx, Working Men’s Club, HAAI, Bob Vylan and Dadi Freyr were the names that caught our eye as we browsed the revised announcement before realising that we haven’t seen Mystery Jets, Everything Everything, Porridge Radio or Pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs for some time. In fact, most of us haven’t seen anyone live for over a year so cross the fingers keep an eye on the news and if things do pan out in our favour then this is one summer event not to be missed.

If it all goes pear-shaped again then there’s this great documentary about a bloke who keeps lions in a park you could watch.

Let’s see what happens…

Standon Calling takes place between July 22nd-25th 2021.

Keith Goldhanger -- Spent the 90's as a frontman with London noisemerchants HEADBUTT - spent the 80's in "Peel favourites" BASTARD KESTREL. Spent a few years mashing up tunes and remixing bands as HIDEOUS WHEEL INVENTION. Is often out and about getting in the way of things and bumping his head on low ceilings - drinks real ale, takes photo's has made a few short films. Will give your band the time of day but will dislike any band that balances full pints of alcohol on the top of guitar amps (Not keen on lead singers that wear hats either).
