Press Release – ‘AMsterdam, Manchester, Lille’
Space Monkeys set sail across land, sea and cobbled streets over the next few months, visiting Amsterdam, Manchester & Lille.
They came from North Manchester in 1995. Tony Wilson signed the band, somewhat prophetically as his last ever signing to the legendary Factory Records Label. That was on a wet Wednesday night in the back room of a run down snooker hall in Bury called ‘Monty’s’ where they had put on a makeshift gig with their friends from the band Elbow (called Soft at the time).
In 1997 Space Monkeys released their classic debut album, the last ever Factory Record to be released ‘The Daddy Of Them All’. Largely ignored by the London/Britpop obsessed UK press they went on to sell over a quarter of a million copies in the US and across the world following the top 40 Billboard success of the single ‘Sugar Cane’ which was recorded in the same studio (Moonraker –Longsight) and with the same engineer (Lee Monteverde) as the Acid House classic ‘Voodoo Ray’.
Danny De Vito liked it and included Space Monkeys on his soundtrack to the film ‘Sliding Doors’ on his Hollywood Records label. Other familiar faces spotted around that time at Space Monkeys gigs would be Liam Gallagher, Ian Brown, Irvine Welsh, Gwen Stefani & somewhat strangely Ozzy Osbourne.
After two successful world tours with bands like Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind, Smashing Pumpkins, the candle burned out at both ends and all the way along the middle and the band split up in 2000, a severe case of musical indifferences and a fatal dose of the Millenium Bug.
Fast forward to 2017 and Space Monkeys return to Earth to play 3 special one off shows….
Space Monkeys perform live on Friday 24th March as part of the Shiiine On Minicruise to Amsterdam alongside fellow Manchester music legends Peter Hook & The Light & Clint Boon amongst others.
Space Monkeys play a special homecoming show at the legendary Band On The Wall venue in Manchester on Saturday 8th April. Two of the UK’s best new bands also perform on the night, Deja Vega and Scuttlers. There is also a special guest DJ slot from Brian Cannon (Microdot) – the brains and design behind many classic record sleeves from Oasis, The Verve, The Charlatans.
To complete the excursion we headline the 2000 capacity L’Aeronef venue in Lille, North France as part of a year long celebration of Manchester Music, Football & Culture. Saturday 10th June.
And then… that’s it… back into the stars searching for new planets to discover…or something like that.
