Sly Antics – Reality, single review
Out April 5
Sly Antics, Hebden Bridge’s finest, now down to a duo release the epic Reality – tomorrow 5th April. Nigel Carr reviews for Louder Than War.
This band has been brooding on the edges of the Manchester music scene for the last three years. I first caught them as part of a package at The Ritz in 2016. For a three-piece, they created one hell of a sound. Fast forward and having gone through two different bassists they are down to a duo – Sam Buckley-Hudson on guitar and vocals and Mr ‘kit destruction’ himself, cousin Lee Hudson on drums!
Reality shows the band in a more contemplative space with a slower yet more determined track. It’s as if they are forcing concrete through an icing bag – such is the pressure that builds with its hypnotic, Stooges Dirt style drumbeat.
It floats over a vinyl crackle giving it a gritty, retro feel before exploding into the biggest crescendo chorus you’ve ever heard. It twists and turns, drops back with a little slow strum before loping forward and taking off again in an orgasmic Floydian framed explosion, bursting forward, dropping again to an organ break before clattering to an epic close. Anthemic in structure, another cracking track from the lads showcasing their power and versatility!
“Reality is a turning point for our sound. This is our first single as a two-piece and we’ve shown a side to Sly Antics that hasn’t really been exposed before. A more vulnerable and honest track based around technology addiction and social pressures which people face day to day. This was our most challenging creation, but we cannot be happier to kickstart 2019 by sharing it with the world”
