Jonny Cola And The A Grades: Rubber Band / Blow Up – single reviewJonny Cola And The A Grades are about to embark on an indefinite protracted break, though not before releasing one more single which fan of the band Martin Haslam reviews for us below.

When I reviewed Jonny Cola And The A Grades last year, I expressed the melancholy fear that any band that I love is doomed to obscurity and poverty. I urged you all to prove me wrong in this instance, simply because if anyone deserves to insidiously invade the mainstream and be bonafide pop stars, it’s Jonny and the boys.

And so, last week, with heavy heart, I read that they are taking a break “it might be for six months, a year, five years, who knows?”. The small ray of light here is that they are leaving us with a rather fine single on white 7″ vinyl; Rubber Band coupled with the excellent Blow Up from last year’s superb Spitfire album.

Rubber Band is brand spanking new; a short, snappy whack round the ears, complete with their reliably fab backing vocals. Part Buzzcocks, part Rezillos, all A Grades in swagger and pout. It really would seem that all their songs are quite filthy, or is that just my imagination?

Blow Up most certainly is; “the girls are outside and I’ve still got my pride; don’t talk with your mouth full”. You really haven’t heard it yet? Check the videos via youtube for both tracks, then kick yourself for not finding them sooner. A firm commitment to a happy ending.

There’s a final gig coming, to be announced soon (see social media links below); be there and pick up the single, or from All Ages Records in Camden before they’re all gone. Before THEY’RE gone. I could cry. Did I mention what a fantastic live band they are?

So, best wishes to Jonny, Jez, Mauro, Marco and Simon in all they do. Enjoy your break; you better come back!
