5. New Model Army – 1984:
The stories of the Miners’ Strike epitomises everything about protest and struggle and this track epitomises everything about what was surely the greatest ever struggle and an event which represented a milestone for lead singer Justin Sullivan. The chunky bassline drives the track perfectly. One of my favourites from a still very relevant and hard working cult band. “Her father crossed the battle lines in the first months of the war She stares down at the soup kitchen; she doesn’t have a father any more It’s cold in the early morning, standing with your mates Starting at the thick blue line, armed and ready at the gates”
