Protag- bass player from the great Zounds/Blyth Power and ATV : RIP

One of the great anarcho punk bands Zounds lost their recent bass player Protag. A populariser face on the British punk scene Protag’s death has shocked the scene.

Zounds left the following statement on their website.

‘Protag played bass in Zounds from 2003 to 2006.

He died today at 9.15 on 18th Feb 2014.

He was an amazing person who was associated with the band from the earliest days.

He was selflessly devoted to Bradford’s 1 in 12 Club to which he gave much energy, care and love.

I could go on and on about how brilliant, interesting, original and funny Protag was but there will be time for that later.

Protag played and organised Blyth Power for years and also played with ATV.

Words can’t express how much we will miss him. Love to all – Steve’

  1. Not forgetting his first band The Instant Automatons. Always a champion of the D.I.Y. scene, he also provided the P.A. at many squat gigs & outdoor festivals like Meanwhile Gardens back in the day. Lovely bloke with it too R.I.P.

  2. A fantastic chap , highly principled , I knew him during his Blyth Power Days – and as a man with a van and PA gave his time selflessly helping bands get a voice . I will always remember when Shelley’s children changed the lyrics of the chorus of “Jack” to Protag . RIP

  3. Protag did the sound for plenty of our gigs back in the 1980’s, including one at Meanwhile Gardens. Lovely guy. Very sad to hear this news.
