Pigs: Gaffe – EP review

Pigs: Gaffe (Solar Flare)
Out Now

New York power trio Pigs have a new offering in the form of a three track EP to keep you going until their next album. For Louder Than War Favio Overclock feels the noise.

Pigs is a New York City power trio consisting of Dave Curran from iconic noise rock outfit Unsane, drummer Jim Paradise and Andrew Schneider who is known for his production work for the likes of Converge, Cave In or Unsane. After the release of their debut album You Ruined Everything last year, the all star line up is back with a three track 10” vinyl on Solar Flare Records that should satisfy fans until their sophomore album is ready.

The title track serves as the opener and effectively sets the tone of this bad tempered record. Paradise’s titanic drumming and Schneider’s sludgy bass make a mammoth of a rhythm section. Add Curran’s gritty vocals and sharp riffs and the result is something that tastes like a blend of liquor, blood, waste motor oil and rusty screws. And we love it.

The more up tempo Elo Kiddies has slightly merrier vibes and even retains a bit of the pop feel of the Cheap Trick original, but make no mistake: with a roaring chorus and unforgiving guitar licks, this is as ear piercing as it gets. Closing track If I’m In Luck is seven minutes of all out overdrive that will drag you through mud and dirt as you feel the weight of the drums on your neck.

It would be safe to regard Gaffe as a road worn record that provides irrefutable evidence of the song crafting skills these three musicians have developed over more than two decades. All the pains and gains from relentless touring are here, condensed into a momentary outburst of high octane noise that makes us wonder whatever happened to the ’90s.
