The ever-reliable Team Love Records have announced the release of the debut solo record by Philip Goth, out April 30th, and it certainly signals the arrival of a stellar new work for those seeking something that lyrically scratches the surface of daily life.
Philip Goth is the moniker of Josh Rawson, a former member of indie-folk heroes The Felice Brothers. As the writer behind a handful of their tracks, Goth’s solo material retains their craft and prowess, whilst being unafraid to create something completely different.
Goth is already someone with a knack for originality and diversity in his songwriting themes, but with the album My Debut Novel set for release on June 11th, the song You Don’t Know What I’ve Been Through Bro provides a suitable glimpse. The subject matter of this, the title of which is somewhat self-explanatory, feels very apt for these times. It sums up his forthcoming debut album incredibly well, a light, fragile feel as expertly carved as the Edvard Munch woodcut which adorns the artwork. You Don’t Know What I’ve Been Through, Bro, has the air of the kind of turmoil made for the digital “you ok hun?” age, but reveals itself to be something more heartbreaking, more sincere, and with a genuine and hugely relevant, eternal message – you really don’t know what someone is going through.
In the case of the narration here, set against the backdrop of gorgeously quirky indie, all hypnotic keyboards and subtly looping guitar lines against Goth’s sublime vocals. It sets a straightforward scene that hints at the potential for wryness before laying out the awful experiences some may have gone through beneath the surface in a fashion that oozes empathy.
But don’t just take my word for all this. Listen and watch the video premiere here, a mix of reflective, beautifully shot monochrome and good old-fashioned messy slapstick showing the unexpected life really can throw us. Something tells me he’s an artist we’ll all eventually be wanting to say we heard at this stage.
