I had already heard the first single Hey Joe/Piss Factory and knew that Patti Smiths voice was like nothing I’d heard before. Horses is a very intense album and the vocal performances of Patti Smith are what carries it. The band fit to her, speeding up, slowing down and it’s more orientated to her poetry/lyrics whereas the albums that followed became more of a rock format with verses and chorus and Patti singing in a more conventional way. It was inspiring to me to see a woman in the male dominated rock world who was doing her own thing and not looking like the archetypal sex symbol.
