9) Paul Ferguson
Rightfully lauded on LTW for his massive contribution to Killing Joke’s sound, ‘Big’ Paul Ferguson’s ability to switch between rock and dance (often in the same song) informs much of the early Killing Joke sound. Although the band made a number of albums with such celebrated drummers as Martin Atkins and Dave Grohl none are able to match the power of the original line up. Thanks to his contribution, the backing track for a song like ‘Psyche’, which features such ‘soft’ components as synths, drum machines and those octave-leaping bass runs beloved of 70’s disco bass players, sounds as threatening and nasty as Jaz Coleman’s lyric, which is no mean feat, believe me.
