Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart

(Roger Greenaway, Roger Cook)

I vaguely remembered the Gene Pitney & Marc Almond version that came out when I was a kid, but later could never remember who it was by or what it was called.  Then I heard the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds version on Kicking Against The Pricks and I remembered what a great song it is!

Johnny Cash – I See A Darkness

(Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy)

The Johnny Cash American Recordings series isn’t short on excellent cover versions and I could just as easily have chosen Hurt, The Mercy Seat, Down There By The Train or many others.  But I think this is my favourite.  When Will Oldham’s harmony vocal joins in on the chorus it’s heartbreaking.

Mick Harvey, Nick Cave, Anita Lane – Je T’Aime…Moi Non Plus

(Serge Gainsbourg)

Another Bad Seeds related effort.  Mick Harvey made two albums of Serge Gainsbourg covers, and while the arrangements remain fairly similar to the originals all the lyrics are translated into English.  Mick sings most of the songs apart from this one where it’s clear Nick is definitely the man for the job.

The Pixies – In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song)

(Peter Ivers)

That voice.

King Creosote – Cod Liver Oil And The Orange Juice

(Hamish Imlach)

This is one of the songs I used to hear Kenny playing in the pub in St Andrews years ago.  The video is a more recent full band version he did with The Earlies, but you should also check out the original by Hamish Imlach.  Filthiest laugh you’ll ever hear.

Part one of the top ten is here.

Guy is a former full time member of the Louder Than War editorial team, who's since moved on to pastures new. Music's been a large part of his life since he first stumbled across Peel on his tranny as a fifteen year old. His whole approach to music was learnt from Peel in fact, which includes having as inclusive a taste in music as possible. Guy devotes most of his time looking for new music & although he's been known to say "the only good music is new music" he pretty much accepts this is bollocks. Favourite band The Minutemen.
