On-U Sound Records have announced details of the release of two new albums to continue the celebrations of their 30th anniversary.
The hugely influential label was established in late 1980, releasing its first album, the eponymous titled New Age Steppers in early ”Ë81.
Primarily associated with the sound of ”Ëdub’ (reggae legends such as Lee Perry, Prince Far I and Mikey Dread have all recorded for the label), the label’s heritage is far broader with many of it’s artists having backgrounds in punk & post-punk, hip-hop and funk. Tackhead, one of the label’s most prodigious artists and a mainstay at their much-loved Pay It All Back nights featured the classic rhythm section of Sugarhill Records house-band while Little Annie also worked with the likes of Crass and Coil.
Under the guidance of label founder and in-house producer Adrian Sherwood, On-U Sound continues to spread its influence and promote cutting-edge contemporary music Ӊ expect a long-awaited new LP from the New Age Steppers in 2012 and a new solo album by the man himself, Adrian Sherwood, early in the New Year.
In the meantime new albums from Little Axe ”ËIf You Want Loyalty Buy A Dog’, and Lee Scratch Perry ”ËNu Sound and Version’ are to be released in late November
”ËIf You Want Loyalty Buy A Dog’ is Little Axe’s 7th studio album and the culmination of a 25-year musical partnership between Skip McDonald and producer Adrian Sherwood. The album also features legendary drummer Style Scott, known for his work as part of both the renowned Dub Syndicate and Roots Radics.
”ËOn-U Sound Presents Lee Scratch Perry Nu Sound and Version’ is an 11-track album of re-workings, re-mixes and re-recordings of tracks originally recorded by Lee Perry and produced by Adrian Sherwood and the On-U Sound crew. A reggae legend, Lee ”ËScratch’ Perry first began working with On-U Sound in the late ”Ë80s. Initially working with Style Scott’s Dub Syndicate rhythm section, he then collaborated with Adrian Sherwood on Time Boom X De Devil Dead in 1987 and From The Secret Laboratory in 1990. He would return to the label in 2008 to release The Mighty Upsetter and the accompanying Dub Setter.
The label’s 30th anniversary celebrations continue with a very special in-store at Rough Trade East on October 27th. The evening begins with a Q&A between Adrian Sherwood and Steve Barker of the highly respected On The Wire radio show – www.otwradio.blogspot.com – which will be followed by a DJ ”Ëhead-to-head’ between Sherwood and another of the UK’s finest ever producers, Dennis Bovell.
