Night Beats & PINS

O2 Academy Newcastle

23rd May 2016

PINS kick off proceedings with an exceptional set, before Night Beats put on an equally impressive and exciting psychedelic show.

With an awesome new album in Who Sold My Generation, Night Beats are riding the crest of a wave and tonight they arrive in Newcastle to showcase this new record. They’ve also brought Manchester’s finest PINS along for the ride, so it is imperative we get down early to check out one of the finest live bands in the UK. Rushing on to the stage, PINS kick things off with a raucous rendition of Molly and from there things go from strength to strength.

Young Girls is always a treat live, their swagger and charm is unparalleled as they get up on barrier enticing the crowd in. From the anthemic Girls Like Us, which is mashed up with Girls Just Want To Have Fun to the hazy Dazed By You. PINS are tighter than ever tonight their set is supremely slick, angst filled yet still a lot of fun. They truly look like they’re having a great time.

To say PINS have set the bar incredibly high would be a huge understatement, but Night Beats rise to the occasion from the off. Kicking off with new track Celebration #1 their swirling guitars and reverb drenched vocals, their power is immediate. This only grows throughout this set, the likes of No Cops are particular highlights with its driving rhythm and incessant groove.

The guys are purposefully charging around the stage as they dole out these incredible riffs, as they throw in a brilliant cover of Bo Diddley’s Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut. Right/Wrong shows a sludgy and dirtier side to the bands sound, where before its been bright guitars. The bass is thumping; the reverb is cranked to its fullest a wonderful wall of hazy noise ensues.

This salubrious sound is then compounded by the swaggering groove of Rat King, all making for an impressive set from Night Beats. However, the slick and polished nature of PINS slightly overshadows them as they truly shone tonight. All in all an exceptional evening of music from two incredible bands.
