Had enough of the Jubilee Concert, need something a little bit darker, a little bit louder to clear the mind?

This should be played at high volume ”“ preferably in a residential area!

Xibalba (pronounced ”shi-ball-bah”) roughly translates as “place of fear” and is the name of the underworld in Maya mythology, ruled by the Maya death gods and their helpers, it’s also the chosen moniker of Californian hardcore conquerors XIBALBA who have just completed tours of Australia and South East Asia. They have now confirmed tour dates in the UK and European this June/July as they prepare to release a brand new album (via Southern Lord) in August.

Initially based in Pomona, California the five piece consisting of Ortiz (Guitar), Valdivia (Bass), Rebolledo (Vocals), Brunes (Drums), Hucle (Guitar) cite Wu Tang Clan, Sepultura and Morbid Angel as influences and deliver some of the heaviest low end hardcore ever witnessed.

Their last album ”ËœMadre Mia Por Los Dias’ stormed the hardcore world with its apocalyptic, down-tuned, slow-motion brutality; add to this the band’s ultra-energizing build ups and relentlessly brutal breakdowns and it’s no surprise that they are regularly compared to Disembodied, and the heaviest of the late ’90s/early 2000s hardcore scene as well as kings groove-laden death metal like Obituary and Sepultura.

Phil Newall is from The Wirral - he earns his living not writing about music nor playing music...though sorely wishes he could. He was fortunate enough to see many of the first generation punk bands when they played the U18's matinee shows at Eric's, Liverpool. As an attendee at Eric's he was exposed to punk rock, dub reggae, art rock, and all manner of weirdness; as a customer at Probe Records he was variously served and scowled at by Pete Wylie and Pete Burns - he has written for Record Collector, Whisperin & Hollerin, and Spiral Scratch and wanted to write a book detailing the Liverpool punk scene; however with 'Head-On' Julian Cope beat him to it...and frankly did a much better job.
