‘Nevermind’ re-created… Pt2

Artist Ed Chapman is not far off finishing a commissioned mosaic, we have been following on his progress (Pt 1)

Ed has been working on a ceramic tile version of the cover of Nirvana’s seminal album ‘Nevermind’ for several weeks and it is now only two or three days away from being completed and ready to be taken to its new home.

The artist, who is self-taught, discovered more than a decade ago that he had a talent for producing highly accurate, unusual portraits from piece of torn paper. The collages have now been taken over by tiles and Ed has taken the medium as far as anyone. He has exhibited work around the world.

He spends hours chipping tiles at his home in Manchester and sometimes his dog, Pippin, tries to help (mostly by sleeping and keeping out of the way, but sometimes by barking at nothing). Though the small, white pooch can be inspiring, Ed is mainly inspired by his own music taste and is really enjoying creating a mosaic of one of his favourite band’s album covers.

Ed’s first piece of art was of Kurt Cobain and since creating that as a hobby, he has ”Ëœmosaiced’ a number of album covers for serious art collectors. Among the mosaics he has produced of record covers are the Sex Pistols ‘Never Mind the Bollocks’, X-Ray Spex ‘Oh Bondage Up Yours!’, and Joy Division’s ‘Ideal for Living’.

He said: “I think a lot of the people I have created pieces for seem to have similar music tastes to me and I have enjoyed making all of them. It is a real pleasure to create something which will adorn the walls of people’s homes and I have really respected the albums that I’ve done covers of, found out more about them if I didn’t know them.

“This piece, Nevermind, is no different.

“I hope the person who owns it will get a lot of enjoyment out of it for years to come. One of my previous clients has a portrait of Johnny Rotten (someone I have a lot of time for) at the top of his stairs and it’s the first thing he sees when he returns home and opens his front door. He’s told me he gets a real buzz every time he sees Johnny’s crazy eyes staring out at him. It’s comments like that which mean a lot to me.”

When an art-lover commissions a piece, Ed will discuss what they like and what will work as a piece of art. Once the tiles have been ordered, from ceramic Mecca Stoke-on-Trent, Ed will sketch out the work before chipping the tiles into hundreds of pieces. It is a messy business, but his wife has put up with the mess for years and is used to it.

He said: “The pieces of tile get everywhere and my wife often complains that somehow a small piece has got into her shoe. Our vacuum cleaners get a lot of abuse! continuing “It’s a bit like doing a jigsaw, but without the clue of the picture on the box. It takes me hours and if I am not happy with a section, I have to smash it up and start again.”

When all the tiles are in place, the piece of work is grouted and it is cleaned up, ready to go to its owner.
