The hometown of Pete Shelley commemorates Buzzcocks’ frontman with a new mural designed by Malcolm Garrett and graffiti artist Akse P19.
The mural is based on the cover of Buzzcocks’ single Ever Fallen In Love and Shelley’s portrait made by Chris Gabrin in 1978. Initiated by The Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign, the project has been accomplished by over three years of fundraising. “The mural is a magnificent achievement made possible by the love and generosity of Pete’s fans, friends, and family”, says Paul Lally, the campaign founder.
Shelley’s cousins Howard Lycett and Rebecca Hamilton, still living locally, said: “As a family, we are delighted to have Pete back in his hometown and looking as vibrant as he ever was. Pete was always incredibly proud of his northern roots, and we hope that the mural will help Pete’s legacy live on and inspire more young artists and musicians to break down barriers and follow their dreams”.
The artwork will be displayed in the central part of Leigh near the new state-of-the-art archive facilities at Leigh Town Hall and the historic Turnpike Centre.
The opening of the mural will take place on 10 July 2022. More information about the project is on the official Facebook page of The Pete Shelley Memorial Campaign.
A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
