Metronomy – Late Night Tales

Sexy, quirky and sometime dark and trippy; Metronomy are the latest artist to deliver the ultimate late night mix in the Late Night Tales series.

The idea is that an artist delves into their record collection and creates an ultimate late night selection. Metronomy, who released the English Riviera last year have dipped into their boxes and delivered this.

The mood is sexy and very smooth, ”˜Outkast’ find the love in their hearts as they channel the spirit of Prince in ”˜Prototype’. ”˜Tweet’ continues the charged sensual feel with the slowed down r’n’b of ”˜Drunk’. ”˜Sa-Ra Creative Partners’ slide the sound into the ”˜Cosmic Ball’, it’s light and loose jazz.

”˜Chick Corea’ sounds like the soundtrack to an old computer game which leads darkly to ”˜Dr Octagon’, smoothly moving into his restful laid back rap, made jarring by the high screech of the scratching. ”˜Lonzo and the Wrecking Crew’ is soul, like Marvin and Barry, it’s a seduction put to music.

”˜Metronomy’s own ”˜Hypnose’ is sexy chilled and laid back, a highlight of the mix. The ”˜Alessi Brothers Seabird’ is a spaced out electro hippy folk song which is mixed into ”˜Autechre’, the least folky music you can imagine, think of a mixed up tempo of bleeps and beats and you have an idea of the very disturbing sound of this track. ”˜Mick Karn’s Weather the Windmill’ is not easy to listen to either, just as dark and disturbing as the last track and its energy broods and simmers.

”˜The Alan Parsons Project’ bring things back to mellow and smooth with ”˜Eye in the Sky’. ”˜Geneva Jacuzzi’ have an eighties with their electrofunk in ”˜Love Caboose’ and then it gets interesting.’ Two Lone Swordsmen’ carry on the funky electric vibe with ”˜You Are…’Tonto’s Expanding Head Band’, I didn’t make that up either, they are really called that, make music you would expect a band called Tonto’s Expanding Head Band to make…swirly, trippy and noodling.

However, ”˜Pete Drake’ is none of these, his voice sounds like a slide guitar over this country and western gem. ”˜Appaloosa’ starts with a singer and a piano accompaniment in ”˜The Day (We Fell In Love)’ it grows into a gentle keyboard and drum sound behind the vocals. ”˜Kate and Anna McGarrigle’ sing the folk song ”˜Complainte Pour Ste Catherine’ alongside drums and an accordion, charming and twee.

The twee goes into sadness and the melancholy, ”˜Herman Dune’ with ”˜Winners Lose’, this sounds lost and alone. As if you’ve been up for too long now in this very late night and the dark hours are wearing you down. Cat Power sounds just as sad and alone with Werewolf. It fades into silence.

Silence which is broken by Paul Morley reading his poem, Lost For Words Part 4. Not so much a story as a description of a ghost that leads into a dissection of pop culture. A flow of words and a stream of consciousness. A very strange way to finish the album.

This record takes you into sensual sexiness, through to quirky electrics and strange trippy sounds. Dark paranoia and strange folk. With an ending of melancholy and darkness to finish with the rantings of the obsessed.

A strange late night journey to embark upon but a rewarding adventure if you dive deep into the music.
