Manchester NQ Photo Studio

Marion have been away for a few years now and tonight’s short acoustic gig is the launch for their newly released “Alive In Manchester” album. This was recorded just before Xmas at their heavily attended Club Academy gig. The photos on the album cover were taken by Macclesfield photographer Natalie Curtis, and tonight’s event is also an exhibition of Natalie’s photographs, especially taken for the cover artwork.
When I arrive all the members of the band and Natalie Curtis are milling around happily talking to fans. The event tonight is in a small art gallery in the same building as Kraak Gallery and all the artwork for the album is framed and displayed on the walls. Natalie’s photographs are stunning black and white shots a mixture of candid backstage and live shots. The album gets a playback and it sounds big, just as a great live album should. Full marks go to Marion’s bass player Julian Phillips for the production.
At about 9pm a stripped down acoustic Marion Take to the stage starting with new song Hurricane and belt their way through Sparkle, Vanessa, another new song, and probably their best known tune Sleep. Singer Jaime’s voice is in fine form just like he’s never been away. He jokes they’re on early so they can all go and get pissed. Marion still have a devoted fan base with several people travelling up from London and one girl flying in from Osaka for the launch gig and tour!
