Madonnatron: Headless Children

Headless Children

The highly anticipated debut album from London-based Madonnatron looks set to be an interesting affair. The band are widely appreciated by bands such as The Moonlandingz and Meatraffle, who invited them on tour in 2016. As well as gigging around the country in their own right, the band have seen radio airplay with first single Sangue Neuf. Marc Riley of 6 Music is a fan and the band are due to do another live session on his June 6 show.

The eerrie tone of new single Headless Children adds to the strange beauty of the track; sinister and lovely. Based on the Mexican legend of La Llorona, who lost her mind and drowned her children, the track showcases Madonnatron’s strengths. The band have multiple vocalists and put them to good use. With driving repetitive rhythms used as a rock for waves of music to crash upon, Headless Children features excellent layered vocals and keyboards. The song has a spellbinding atmosphere.

The band describe themselves as ‘Witch Prog’, a celebration of ladies less ordinary. La Lorna is described as a manifestation of feminine destructiveness, likened to the banshee and the daemon Lilith. Madonnatron might not be quite so dangerous, but they play by their own rules.

The band have only been together for a relatively short time. This seems to work in their favour making them willing to experiment. The music can sometimes feel a little doom-laden but is always interesting. They have a new line-up, which is already proving to be successful. The band are really beginning to etch out their own niche in the alternative music scene.

The album is set for release on June 30 and the band are performing gigs and festival slots in the lead up to the release. They are also at the Green Man Festival in August. Catch them if you can, as they really bring the stage to life and have performed some stunning sets.
