Madonna shows support for Pussy Riot live on stage in Moscow
You can say what you like about Madonna, and many do, but this was quite a remarkable moment when the pop superstar showed her support for Pussy Riot on stage at a gig in Moscow.

The pop superstar was performing at Moscow’s Olimpisky Stadium on Tuesday night and during the set donned a balaclava and stripped off her clothes to reveal the words “Pussy Riot” scrawled across her back during a performance of her 1984 hit Like a Virgin.

She was the latest in a long list of global stars, MPs and musicians who have shown support the Russian band who face seven years in prison.

“I know there are many sides to every story, and I mean no disrespect to the church or the government, but I think these girls ”¦ have done something courageous and they have paid the price for this act and I pray for their freedom,” Madonna said earlier in the show to massive applause. “They deserve the right to be free.”

Pytor Verzilov, Tolokonnikova’s husband, praised the move: “She might be changing Russia’s history by this. To give a sentence after something like this would be commiting international political suicide, admitting that you’re no better than North Korea.”

We have been covering the case since the beginning, most recently with an open letter to Vladimir Putin and a blog from British MP Kerry McCarthy who attended the Pussy Riot trial in Moscow a couple of days ago.

  1. madonna wants to support Pussy Riot but does not intent to be mean to church nor gonverment… Is she aware that the band’s action was against church and goverment ? Why don’t she just ZIP it ??? She’s just trying to be edgy, this f*cking poser, populist. She is just the same as church and Puttin and deserves nothing but hate.

  2. Well, Pussy, we could just be totally fucking negative cos that will really help wont it? Or does everyone have to be 100% in support of what YOU think or it doesnt count? I’m no fan of Madonna but having such a name showing support onstage in Moscow just might make a difference. Isnt that what is wanted?
